Improved fuel efficiency. introductionthe gmc sierra was redesigned from the ground up in 2007 using proven powertrains. The 2009 model year brings minor refinements, a few additions, and new hybrid and high-efficiency xfe models. the sierra is built on a stiff platform for a smooth ride and sharp handling. The gmc sierra shares platforms with the chevy silverado but its exterior styling is quite different. sierra interiors offer a choice of two dashboard styles. The pure pickup interior includes a 40/20/40 split front bench seat with the center section folding down to provide a large storage compartment and wide armrest. The other style in the luxurious sierra slt is similar to what's found in the latest luxury suvs, with two front bucket seats separated by a fixed center console. It can be equipped with a standard bed (6-foot, 6-inch) or a long bed (8-foot), two bucket seats or a three-person bench seat, v6 or v8. the extended cab has two rows of seats with rear-hinged rear access doors that open 170 degrees and have roll-down windows. The extended cab can be equipped with either a short bed (5-foot, 8-inch), standard or long bed. Denali options include a heated steering wheel, heated/cooled front seats, sunroof, and rear-seat entertainment. Denali comes only as a crew cab with a 403-hp 6. 2-liter v8 engine, six-speed automatic transmission and rear or all-wheel drive. all terrain model features the z71 off-road package, heavy-duty trailer package, 18-inch wheels, rancho shocks, and myriad cosmetic enhancements. When ordered with slt trim, exclusive two-tone leather is used. With epa ratings in the 20-22 mpg range its urban economy is the best of the sierras, the compromises being price, payload (max mid-1400-pound-range) and maximum tow capacity around 6000 pounds. options include a locking rear differential, stabilitrak, towing and trailering equipment, and a power sunroof. safety features include dual front airbags and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Optional head curtain airbags automatically inflate when sensors sense a severe impact to provide extra protection in the event of a rollover or secondary collision. Also available: driver and front-seat passenger side-impact air bags; anti-lock brakes, stabilitrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology, autotrac active transfer case, ultrasonic rear park assist, onstar emergency notification. walkaroundthe front-end design of the gmc sierra emphasizes the truck's wide stance. The gmc emblem is set amid dark horizontal bars in the middle of an upright and chrome-surrounded grille. The headlamps are a pair of stacked, jeweled lenses. The front bumper features round fog lamps and a wide air intake and wraps around the sides of the truck to the front lower edge of the front wheel wells. top trim levels get some distinguishing features. The denali gets its own chromed grilles, both the upper section and the air vent below the front bumper, and the bumpers are painted to match. Hybrid models are festooned with odd-looking h badges. the sierra hood has a pair of long, narrow v-shaped power bulges and leads back to a steeply raked windshield. The windshield is tilted back for improved aerodynamics and enhanced highway fuel economy. the side view features slightly bulging and elongated fender flares that sweep down behind the headlamps. The sides of the cargo bed are higher than on previous models, and the exterior of the tailgate is sculpted, enhancing the rear view of the truck. Stacked tail lamps are on either side of the tailgate. a cargo management system is available for the bed with side rails and various cargo-carrying and cargo-controlling boxes and dividers and tie-downs. the gmc sierra and chevy silverado are built on the gmt900 platform that debuted in 2007 and shares many underpinnings with the yukon, suburban, tahoe suvs. The pickups get a unique rear suspension and frame section that is 245 percent stiffer. The sierra and silverado share mechanical components, with the exception of the unique features found on the sierra denali. compared with the previous-generation (pre-2007) models, the current frame is 234 percent stiffer in torsional rigidity, 62 percent more resistant to bending and 136 percent stiffer laterally. This yields a smoother ride and better handling. It also allowed the engineers to reduce the gap between the truck bed and passenger compartment as well as the gaps between fenders and bumpers, all of which enhances aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. the front suspension uses a coil-over-shock setup and the rack-and-pinion steering gear is mounted to the engine cross member frame. Except for hybrids and the 6. 2-liter, epa ratings run 13-15 mpg city, 17-20 mpg highway, and on e85 those numbers drop substantially. a late addition to the 2009 lineup are xfe (xtra fuel economy) models with a 5. 3-liter v8, six-speed automatic and axle ratio of 3. 08:1 that increase epa ratings form 14/20 to 15/21. Proprietary xfe pieces include aerodynamic upgrades in the form of a soft bed cover and extended front air dam, plus aluminum wheels (including the spare) and lower front suspension arms, locking rear differential, and low rolling resistance tires. A trailering package is standard so xfe models can tow up to 7000 pounds. interioras mentioned, two types of interiors are available. The gmc sierra slt boasts interior features popularized by the yukon sport utility, providing a much more upscale environment for the driver and passengers. Gmc hasn't forgotten about owners who use their trucks for work, however. So the other sierra models use a 'pure pickup' interior with more function, like dual glove boxes, and less luxury. the pure pickup, as it's called, has a unique dashboard that is more driver-oriented and has larger switchgear and door handles that are designed to be easily manipulated by thos.

Xl means extra large. introductionthe gmc yukon xl is a great choice for towing cars, boats, horses, and travel trailers when enclosed space is needed for passengers or cargo. Yukon xl is offered in 1500 and 2500 versions. maximum towing capacity ranges from 7800-8100 pounds for a yukon xl 1500 model, and about 9500 pounds on a yukon xl 2500. (subtract 1500-2500 pounds if the yukon is fully loaded with people and cargo.) with its long wheelbase and full-size truck construction, the yukon xl is a stable platform for towing while offering the interior cargo advantages and three-row seating of a full-size suv. yukon xl is gmc's version of the chevrolet suburban. As the xl suggests, the yukon xl is extra-long, 20 inches longer than the standard-length yukon. Like the suburban, the yukon xl seats seven to nine people, depending on configuration. While many vehicles will seat seven, few have so much room left over for cargo (three sedan trunks of space). yukon xl denali is a luxurious model that compares well to the cadillac escalade esv. Denali comes equipped with a larger engine and automatic rear load-leveling (both shared with the escalade). inside is a comfortable cabin. We found the optional leather seats comfortable. The driver sits way up high for a commanding view of the road, and the pedals power-adjust to fit short and tall drivers. The instruments and gauges are among best in class, elegantly clean yet very functional. Interior small items storage is intelligently designed and all over, including a huge center console. second-row passengers will find a lot of leg room in the yukon xl. Heated bucket seats with a center console between them are available for the second row, turning them into first-class accommodations; and there is a power folding option, making it easier for third-row passengers to climb by. Gm's 5. 3-liter vortec v8 is the standard choice and makes 320 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque. We enjoyed its smooth power. The 5. 3-liter gets an epa-estimated 15/21 miles per gallon city/highway, with 2wd or 4wd. Flex-fuel versions of the 5. 3-liter v8 are available that can run on e85 ethanol, though use of less-efficient ethanol drops fuel economy significantly. yukon xl denali boasts a 403-hp 6. 2-liter v8. Denali is offered with two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the latter an excellent aid for inclement weather but not designed for serious off-road use. Denali comes standard with the autoride active electronic suspension, which is optional on the regular yukon xl. Denali models get an epa-rated 14/18 mpg with 2wd and 13/18 with awd. Gov for comparison shopping. yukon xl 2500 models come with a 6. 0-liter iron-block v8 rated at 352 hp, 382 lb-ft of torque, epa 10/16 and 10/15 mpg, with 2wd and 4wd, respectively. Yukon xl 2500 is designed for heavy use, as are all of its mechanical components. yukon xl and denali models use a 6-speed automatic transmission. They all have a tow/haul mode that reduces upshifting and downshifting, and also shifts quicker, so the transmission doesn't work so hard when pulling a big load. Transmission oil temperature is part of the instrumentation on most models. convenience features include a power rear liftgate, a new 10-speaker bose surround-sound system, a navigation system, and a dvd rear-seat entertainment system. Rearview cameras are standard with navigation and available for others with display in inside mirror. the current-generation gmc yukon xl dates from 2007, but it has been improved and refined since then. A champagne paint and automatic grade braking are new for 2013. yukon xl competes with ford expedition el, suburban, and, if cargo space isn't as critical, toyota sequoia and infiniti qx56. Yukon xl denali alternatives include the lincoln navigator l, cadillac escalade esv, and mercedes-benz gl-class. lineupthe 2013 gmc yukon xl 1500 comes in sle, slt and denali trim levels. Options include rear park assist and two rearview camera choices. walkaroundthe gmc yukon xl is the extra-long version, about 20 inches longer than a yukon. It's the twin to the chevy suburban, where the yukon plays twin to the tahoe. the suburban and yukon xl share sheetmetal body panels but differ in details such as the grille, bumpers and lamps. These are big boxes but quite smooth, rather like an ocean liner's long flat sides and tapered ends. The denali xl adds some of the upscale cues found on the cadillac escalade esv, which shares the same platform. the running board/side steps are integrated and unobtrusive, extending no farther than necessary, with a black grippy coating; powered retractable steps are available on some models. The tinted glass behind the c-pillar is expansive, and adds to both appearance and function. The front end has a clean appearance, with block-like headlamps over a front bumper fascia. Doors close with a reassuring thud. wheels change visual perceptions of the yukon xl. The standard aluminum wheel is a nice piece for look and function. Dealers offer a host of dress-up items, including wheels up to 22-inches. The standard 17-inch wheels offer the best ride quality due to tires with tall sidewalls. Ride quality gets harsher as wheel diameters increase. the rear window opens separately, which is convenient for loading lighter bags and cargo. The larger liftgate is aluminum and balanced, upgradeable to power for those accustomed to a push-button world. Roof racks can carry unwieldy items that aren't too heavy, but be sure to load with the hatch open or af.
