2012 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A new kind of explorer gets a new kind of engine. introductionout of the box, the ford explorer has demonstrated itself to be one the best, seven-passenger sport-utility vehicles available. It delivers the function and family friendly features of a minivan with a more rugged emotional appeal, off-road and towing capability for those who need it, and suv mileage that was unheard of back in the day.  the venerable explorer was essentially re-invented for 2011, and ford might have taken a pass on further improvements for 2012. The opposite is true. It has more power than the standard v6 in the previous-generation explorer, with half the displacement, and it delivers the highest epa mileage ratings in this class: 20/28 mpg city/highway.  this latest-generation explorer has a one-piece, unitized body and frame like the typical sedan, rather than an old-school, ladder-type truck frame with a separate, bolted on body. Both the 2. 0 ecoboost and the standard 3. 5-liter v6 are more powerful than previous-generation engines, yet mileage improves up to 40 percent.  the 2012 explorer is available in base, xlt and limited trim levels. All are great looking, rugged in a familiar suv way, but also fresh and aerodynamically refined, and all models seat seven. This big suv actually looks smaller than it is.  inside, there is class-leading legroom in the second row, real space for passengers in the third, and up to 80. 7 cubic-feet of cargo space. It can be reconfigured in seconds, with split rear seats that fold with a button on each side and bounce back up with the pull of a lever. The interior is smartly styled and well finished. The materials are good and the build quality great.  the base explorer comes well equipped, with all the essentials, plenty of niceties and no overly complicated controls. The leather-upholstered, heated-seat limited is luxury grade. It's offered with nearly all the bells and whistles, including premium audio, navigation and rear-seat dvd entertainment. We prefer the standard 290-horspower v6. It delivers smooth, strong acceleration, and ranks near the top of the class in both horsepower and fuel economy: 17/25 mpg.  explorer's chassis is super rigid, using twice as much high-strength steel as the old. That makes for not only great crash-test scores, but also a quiet cabin, excellent ride quality and solid handling that belies the explorer's considerable size.  all-wheel drive is available on all models with the v6. The all-wheel drive maximizes traction with a fancy electronic system called terrain management. Even with regular all-season tires rather than specialized tires, the explorer will blast through sand or traverse deep ditches and steep hills, no problem. And it has the smoothest ride we've encountered over such terrain.  ford claims the explorer has 10 segment-exclusive features or systems, starting with a couple of safety standouts: the optional inflatable rear seatbelts and standard curve control, which applies braking to individual wheels as needed to correct corner trajectory. Beyond the required complement of front, front-side and head-protection airbags, it has an extra knee-protection airbag for the front passenger and all the electronic traction and stability systems, including rollover mitigation and trailer sway control. lineupthe 2012 ford explorer comes in three models. Each comes standard with a 290-hp, 3. 5-liter v6 engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. Options are limited to ford's sync voice activation and phone connection system 295), satellite radio hardware 195), a cargo shade 135), and a tow package 570).  explorer xlt 31,995) adds upgraded cloth seats, leather steering wheel and shift knob, basic sync and satellite radio, a security touchpad on the driver's door, automatic headlamps, heated sideview mirrors with led turn signals and security approach lamps, a backup warning beeper and 18-inch painted aluminum wheels.  explorer limited 37,995) adds leather seats, 10-way power driver seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, 390-watt sony audio with cd changer, selectshift manual mode for the 6-speed automatic transmission, power folding outside mirrors, ambient lighting, adjustable pedals with memory, cargo net, a rearview camera, remote start, a 110-volt outlet, 20-inch painted aluminum wheels, and last but not least the myfordtouch driver connect technology. Second-row captain's chairs are available on limited.  options for the xlt and limited are plentiful, somewhat confusing and grouped in various packages. One of the most popular is equipment group 202a 2,250) for the xlt, which includes leather seating, the 10-way power driver seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, rearview camera and ambient lighting. Stand alone options include a voice-activated navigation system 795), a panoramic glass sunroof 1,595), dual-screen rear seat dvd system 1,995) and a power liftgate 495).  safety features are headlined by ford's new curve control, which applies braking to individual wheels as needed to correct corner trajectory. It's part of a comprehensive electronics suite, which also includes antilock brakes and ford's activetrack stability system with rollover mitigation and trailer sway control. Standard crash protection starts with dual-threshold front airbags, a front passenger knee protection airbag, front-seat side impact airbags, head-protection curtains for all outboard seats and sos post-crash alert. The insurance institute for highway safety rates the explorer a top safety pick.  one optional safety feature is the industry-first inflatable rear seatbelts, which spread impact forces over an area five times greater than conventional seat belts, reducing pressure on the chest and helping to control head and neck motion. Other safety options include the rearview camera and rear obstacle warning, adaptive cruise control with collision warning and brake support, and a blind-sport warning system with cross-traffic alert. All-wheel drive can improve handling stability in slippery conditions. walkaroundthe ford explorer is a looker, rugged but refined, familiar but definitely fresh. Five new metallic paint colors for 2012 enhance its polished appearance.  re-invented for 2011, the current explorer is 4 inches longer and 5 inches wider than its body-on-frame predecessor. It's a foot longer than ford's edge crossover, a few inches shorter than the dodge durango suv and about eight inches shorter than the chevy traverse. Yet it's several inches wider than all of them.  explorer's width is evident in its confident stance, but its smooth styling cheats the eye. It has beefy but smooth proportions, with fluid lines that are more aerodynamic than before. The amber indicators sweep back like narrow wings atop tidy main projector beams. The plastic grille is gray on the base explorer, body-colored on the xlt (the best looking), and satin-chrome on the limited. The hood looks short from the side but long when looking straight down it. It's got two parallel humps and a scoop in the center, smoother than it sounds. Rear taillights are led, and also look good. We still like body-colored better.  the window outline is clean, bold and symmetrical, with blackened a-, b-, and d-pillars, and body-colored c-pillars that slant down and back and impart forward motion to the vehicle. The fender flares are inspired by the mustang, body sides follow the lines of the taurus, and the three-bar grille strikes clearly of range rover (until recently part of the ford family). There's a rich, shiny brownish color called golden bronze metallic that we swear we've seen on range rovers, only it looks even better on the explorer.  wheels are 17-inch steel with plastic cov.

2010 ford explorer sport trac review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The ford explorer sport trac is effectively an explorer suv with a pickup bed, a midsize utility vehicle that delivers rugged styling, capable power and a versatile cargo area. Two powertrain combinations are available: a 210-hp 4. 0-liter v6 engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission is standard on all trims, while a 292-hp 4. 6-liter v8 engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission is optional on the limited. Sport trac xlt trims are well-equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, satellite radio and mp3 capability; limited trims are further outfitted with 18-inch chrome-clad wheels, side step bars, hard tonneau cover, heated front seats, leather upholstery, upgraded audio and the sync communication system with bluetooth wireless connectivity. Standard safety features on every sport trac include advancetrac with roll stability control, traction control, anti-lock disc brakes and a tire pressure monitor, as well as dual front, front side-impact and side-curtain airbags. For 2010, the ford explorer sport trac carries over with minor adjustments to standard equipment and a restructured ordering strategy. The xlt trims now get manual driver lumbar support, while limited trims get revised wheels and an upgraded audio system with 6-disc cd changer. 2012 ford flex review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The ford flex is a full-size family vehicle that features three-rows of seating, bold styling and is highly functional. The flex competes directly in the popular crossover segment. The front-wheel or all-wheel drive flex is powered by a 262-hp 3. 5-liter v6 engine. Available on all-wheel drive models only is a 355-hp 3. 5-liter twin-turbo v6 engine featuring ecoboost. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, with the ecoboost models providing steering wheel paddle shifters. Seven-passenger seating is standard on all trim levels. Available features include the sync communication and entertainment system, a multi-panel vista roof, interior refrigerator, and capless fueling. For 2012, the second row bench seat in the limited and titanium now includes a flip out armrest with two cupholders. The ecoboost engine is no longer available on the sel awd trim.

2007 ford edge review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new crossover utility vehicle on the cutting edge. introductionthe 2007 ford edge is an all-new crossover sport utility that answers the call for a roomy vehicle with utility and style. Nor is it a minivan. Yet it's more than a car.  the edge handles better than the truck-based explorer while offering almost as much cargo space. Benefiting from all-wheel drive and a fully independent suspension, it's easier to control than a truck-based suv in the snow or on wet, slippery roads. Also, getting in and out of both the front and back seats is easier. In fact, the back seats in the edge are roomier than those in the explorer, a benefit of its design.  the edge is not small. It competes with the nissan murano, toyota highlander and other midsize crossover utility vehicles, all of which are larger than they appear.  we found the edge delivered on its promise to be a dual-purpose vehicle. It's roomy and comfortable, and it has fully foldable seats for cargo carrying. It drives well, with good performance from a new v6 engine mated to a new six-speed transmission.  the edge has a modern look we find appealing and its bold chrome grille adds to its presence. We're certain most will view the edge as an edgy suv more than a car. That's no doubt intentional, designed to be appealing for drivers moving from a traditional suv who want a rugged look with room for the family and assorted stuff. Meanwhile, those who are moving across from a sedan will find they have not given up too much in the way of comfort and convenience and driving dynamics. lineupall ford edge models are powered by a brand-new 3. 5-liter v6 engine producing 265 horsepower. It is coupled to a new six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard. All-wheel drive (awd) is also available.  the ford edge se 25,320) includes cloth seats, power windows with driver one-touch down, remote keyless entry, am/fm/cd/mp3. The se is available with awd 26,970).  the sel 27,315) and sel awd 28,965) come with upgraded seat materials, an aluminum surround on the instrument panel, automatic headlights, an auto dimming rearview mirror, fog lamps, dual chrome exhaust tips, and a body colored rear spoiler, mirrors and door handles.  the sel plus 29,070) adds a premium package with leather trimmed seats with memory, dual electronic climate control system, exterior puddle lamps, heated seats and exterior mirrors, a particulate air filter, and audio controls on the steering wheel. The seating flexibility package is also included which adds the remote release rear seat back and folding front passenger seat. The sel plus is also available with awd 30,720).  options for the sel include the vista roof 1,395), 18-inch wheels 395), reverse sensing system 245), navigation system 2,380), sirius satellite radio 195), and a cargo management system 65).  safety features that come standard on all models include seat-mounted side-impact air bags for the front seats and side curtain airbags with rollover protection for both rows of seating, the mandated front airbags, anti-lock brakes with advancetrac electronic stability control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. walkaroundwhen we first saw the ford edge we were surprised to discover it is much bigger than it appears in photographs. The reason is immediately apparent, it has a very wide track and a longish wheelbase. More important, this is not just about looks. A long wheelbase and wide track make for a more stable vehicle because the mass of the vehicle is inside the wheels. A go-kart is the ultimate expression of this look. We're not suggesting the edge looks like a go-kart, but its aggressive stance makes it stand apart from the tippy look of traditional suvs with relatively narrow track measurements and massive front and rear overhangs.  the edge features ford's newly rediscovered bold, american design. The big chrome grille is placed well forward and has wide chrome slats that merge into the relatively small headlights at each side. The high hood is short as the windshield rakes forward more like a sports car or modern minivan.  despite having a relatively high waist line with shallow side windows, the edge does not appear as stubby as photographs sometimes suggest. The sporty look is helped by pronounced fender flares and large wheels. The rear tailgate slopes quite significantly and is nicely rounded, avoiding the truck-like rear tailgates found on many suvs. We found the rear design to be a cross between a lexus rx and a bmw x3, which cannot be a bad thing.  to top it all off, the optional vista roof adds expansive twin glass moonroofs that cover the whole roof providing all passengers with a clear view of the sky. There is only a foot-wide panel between the front and rear panels that is not transparent. interiorutility used to mean just the ability to carry stuff. Comfort and style were secondary, even mutually exclusive. The edge manages to provide plenty of utility and a stylish, comfortable interior. Starting at the back, the tailgate lifts to reveal a wide opening. And even when the rear seats are in place there's a reasonable amount of cargo room.  pressing a button automatically reclines the rear seats to give a total of nearly 70 cubic feet of storage on a nearly flat floor. Furthermore, the front passenger seatback can be folded forward to provide a mostly level floor space for long objects all the way to the dashboard. Headroom is also reasonable in the rear, even with the optional sky vista roof. The rear-center passenger even gets more room than normal in a vehicle of this size, thanks to the wide track. Getting in and out is easier due to the rear wheels being placed well back allowing for less intrusion from the wheel well.  front-seat occupants find a generous amount of room, again largely due to the vehicle's generous width. There is a large center console with a storage box big enough for a laptop computer. There are two decent cupholders alongside the substantial looking transmission shifter. The edge is based off the same platform as the ford fusion and the mazda6, regarded as one of the best handling midsize sedans. So the edge starts life with a good base. Ford says it purposely designed the edge to deliver a slightly softer ride. Those who have driven both vehicles concur with this assessment.  ford's all-new 3. 5-liter v6 engine has variable valve timing and is much smoother and more refined than its previous v6s. The new engine is mated to a new six-speed automatic transmission developed with general motors. We found the engine produced a good range of power at all speeds and the transmission shifted smoothly. We would rate the performance as middle of the pack: it's neither a barnburner nor a slug.  we found the rack-and-pinion steering provided good feedback with precise control. The edge we drove had all-wheel drive and the optional 18-inch wheels helped make the car more sure-footed. We did not get a chance to drive a base model but suspect it will still be more than acceptable despite having slightly less grip.  the all-wheel-drive system is simple, with a viscous coupling in the middle of the driveshaft that constantly alters the power to the front or rear depending on the need at any given time.  the edge is not designed for off-road use yet it has a decent ground clearance of eight inches and ford even specifies its approach angle (16 inches), departure angle (24. 5 inches), and ramp break over angle (17 degrees), specifications usually reserved for off-road vehicles. We think it'll be fine for unpaved roads. Ford's advancetrac electronic stability control is standard on all models. It operates via the abs to control wheel slippage when the driver pushes the vehicle beyond the limit in slippery conditions or in emergency avoidance situation on a dry highway. summarythere's no denying that the ford e. 2011 ford edge review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Major revisions improve midsize crossover utility vehicle. introductionford's five-seat midsize crossover utility vehicle, the edge, was introduced in 2007, and has been extremely successful, selling more than any other vehicle in the segment every year since its introduction. There were some minor modifications made to the edge for 2009, but the 2011 model counts as a major makeover, with 60 percent of its parts and components replaced.  the 2011 ford edge gets fresh styling with a new grille, hood, fenders, lamps, bumper and air intakes up front, with new handles all around, new taillamps, liftgate, wheels, and exhaust system outlets at the rear. Under the hood, there is more power from both its basic v6 engine and the upgraded and uprated sport v6. This system is an improvement on ford's existing sync voice-activated communications technology. The engine sounds strong in the lower gears, throaty and authoritative. Yet while cruising on the highway in top gear, the cabin is very quiet, making it easy to carry on a conversation.  brakes are much improved, with much better pedal feel, and none of the mushiness in the previous generation. lineupthe 2011 ford edge comes in se 27,220), sel 30,220), limited 34,220), and sport 36,220) versions. Front-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is available on all models: edge se awd 29,070), edge sel awd 32,070), edge limited awd 36,070), edge sport awd 38,070). (all new car test drive prices are manufacturer's suggested retail prices, which do not include destination charges and may change at any time without notice.)  options include navigation 795); panoramic vista roof 1,595); 20-inch chrome wheels 895); trailer tow package 395).  safety equipment standard on the edge includes front, side and roof curtain air bags, abs, advancetrac traction and yaw control with rollover stability control, sos post-crash alert system, and tire pressure monitoring. Options include blind spot information system with cross traffic alert; all-wheel drive. walkaroundfor 2011, edge has been given a substantial cosmetic and content makeover, a major makeover, with 60 percent of its parts and components replaced. That means a new grille, hood, fenders, lamps, bumper and air intakes up front, with new handles all around, new taillamps, liftgate, wheels, and exhaust system outlets at the rear.  the sport model has a tuxedo black grille and lower intakes, a front spoiler, body-colored handles, rocker extensions, different exhaust tips, aluminum alloy pedal covers, 22-inch chrome wheels and big tires, myfordtouch, and a 305-horsepower v6 engine that is exclusive to this model. This is essentially the same engine that comes in the base mustang, and gives the sport version to most power in the class. interiorthere is nothing much left of the previous edge's interior decor. The instrument panel, seat trims, door panels and door pockets have all been redesigned for more comfort and utility.  it's a crossover utility vehicle, so the front passenger seat folds flat, and each half of the second seat folds flat independently. The rear seat also reclines for additional passenger comfort. With this scheme, the driver can haul objects up to eight feet long on the right side of the cabin.  the instrument panel, center stack, switches and controls have all been redone for the 2011 models, and there are essentially two different approaches. Mft, the thumb switches, and the screen combine to control climate, sound system, telephone, navigation and an enormous variety of information functions including turn-by-turn directions, sports scores, fuel prices, movie listings, dining, and even horoscopes, using a new list of up to 10,000 voice commands.  as for storage, the capacity of the edge remains the same, 32. 2 cubic feet behind the second seat, 68. 9 cubic feet with the second seat folded flat. driving impressionthere will be two engines for the edge at the start of production. The base v6 a 3. 5-liter double-overhead cam, 4-valve engine with variable cam timing, rated at 285 horsepower and 253 foot-pounds of torque. The sport version will come only with a larger and much more powerful 3. 7-liter version of the same architecture with 305 horsepower and 285 foot-pounds of torque.  the 6-speed transmission comes with a ordinary shifter on the se model, with a selectshift manual-control shifter on the sel and limited models, and with selectshift and wheel-mounted paddle shifters on the sport version. The engine sounds strong in the lower gears, throaty and authoritative, but in sixth gear cruising, the cabin is very, very quiet, and speech intelligibility around the cabin is excellent.  ford has also fixed what we thought was a deficient braking system on the earlier models. Almost everything in the braking system has been upgraded, and the feel at the pedal, where it counts, is vastly improved. All the mushiness and indecision has been taken out of the brake pedal.  a trailer sway control system is tied into the traction and yaw control systems, to make towing up to 3500 pounds a lot easier because the trailer isn't constantly moving from side to side back there. summaryford has done a very good job up updating what was already a winner. The 2011 ford edge accelerates quicker, it brakes harder and more progressively, it's measurably quieter on the highway than the previous version, and its onboard electronics and entertainment systems are clearly the best in the industry in terms of capability and ease of use. It's very cool to look at, and the sport version is the quickest cuv for the money in the segment, with the biggest, showiest tires and wheels. The sel, the highest volume model, is equipped and priced in a segment sweet spot. The ford edge is a five-passenger crossover sport utility that answers the call for a roomy vehicle with utility and style. Nor is it a minivan. Yet it's more than a car. The edge is powered by a 285-hp 3. 5-liter v6 engine, while the edge sport adds a 305-hp 3. 7-liter v6; both engines use a six-speed automatic transmission, the sport adds steering wheel shift paddles. Front-wheel drive is standar. Cruise Control✔ Navigation System✔ Chrome Wheels
