2008 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. For 2008, silverado gets some detail improvements and minor pricing adjustments.  the styling is bold yet still conservative when compared with the latest pickups from dodge, nissan, toyota, and ford. The popular 5. 3-liter v8 delivers good power when needed and quiet cruising when not. lineupthe 2008 chevy silverado is available in several trim levels: wt, lt1, lt2, and ltz. The extended cab has rear access doors that are hinged at the rear but that open to 170 degrees to provide full access to the rear seating area.  the standard cab can be outfitted with a standard (6-foot, 6-inch) or long (8-foot) beds. Larger cabs typically include more standard equipment, and 4wd adds $2,000-$3,000.  five suspension setups are available: z83 is the standard suspension and is designed for a smooth ride; z85 is a little firmer for enhanced handling and towing; z71 is for off-road driving and includes 18-inch wheels; z60 is for maximum street performance and includes 20-inch wheels; nht is for maximum towing capacity and includes high-capacity rear springs as well as all-terrain tires.  safety features on all silverado models dual front airbags, anti-lock brakes, tire pressure monitoring system. Options include side-curtain airbags (lt, ltz only), stabilitrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology (extended cab only, standard crew), autotrac active transfer case, ultrasonic rear parking assist, onstar.  option prices vary by trim level and body style. Among them (ltz prices shown): a cargo management system for the truck bed 95), a power sliding sunroof 795), 20-inch wheels/suspension 995), a power sliding rear window 200), rear-seat entertainment system 1,295), and navigation system 2,250). On lesser models: locking differential 395), stabilitrak electronic stability control 425), tow packages (about $300-$750). walkaroundthe 2008 chevy silverado may not have the aggressive styling of the dodge ram or nissan titan or even the toyota tundra or ford f-150, but its upright design may be considered both bold and appealing to its faithful customers, and they buy hundreds of thousands of silverados each year.  a raked windshield (raked at 57 degrees) and careful aerodynamic and body-building engineering make the truck both quieter on the inside and more fuel efficient. Gm boasts that the silverado and gmc sierra are the first full-size trucks to offer both 300 horsepower and epa highway ratings of 20 miles per gallon (2wd 4. 3 and 5. 3 on gasoline).  the large, gold chevy bowtie badge is set against a wide, three-bar chrome grille. The grille is flanked by stacked headlamps sporting the latest reflector-optics. The front bumper incorporates rectangular fog lamps.  the hood has a wide power dome. Bulging front fenders wrap over the front wheels and incorporate the headlamps within their forward sweep. Likewise, the rear quarter panels are punctuated by large faired wheel wells.  the rear view of the truck features stacked tail lamps on either side of a tall tailgate that has a sculpted center section that mimics and inverts the shape of the fender flares.  built on what general motors calls its gmt900 platform, the silverado shares much of its underpinnings with the tahoe suv, though the pickup truck gets a unique rear suspension and a frame section that is 245 percent stiffer. Compared to the former generation silverado, the frame is 234 percent stiffer torsionally, 62 percent more resistant to bending and 136 percent stiffer laterally. All of this allows such things as reducing the gap between the truck bed and passenger compartment and between fenders and bumpers. It also enhances aerodynamics and fuel efficiency and allows suspension components to provide improved ride and handling characteristics.  the front suspension uses coil-over shock absorbers (rather than torsion bars) and the rack-and-pinion steering gear is mounted to the engine cross member frame to provide enhanced control and feedback. The silverado benefits from a rear axle design featuring shocks absorbers mounted outboard and more upright for better dynamic control than that of the previous-generation models. interiorthe silverado wt and lt come with what chevy calls the pure pickup truck interior while the ltz features a more luxurious interior.  the pure pickup interior is more driver and work oriented, includes two glove boxes in the dashboard, one of them just about the right size to hold a pair of work gloves and a few small items, and a 40/20/40-split front bench seat with the center section of the seat back folding down to form a wide arm rest with lots of storage capacity. This interior features large switchgear controls and interior door handles designed to be easily manipulated even while wearing bulky gloves.  the more luxury-oriented interior includes bucket seats with a permanent center console with 20 liters of storage capacity. The center stack puts ventilation and audio controls within easy site and reach of the front seat passenger. This version has a single glove box in the dash.  for 2008, all silverado models get brighter gauge needles for easier viewing in daylight, xm satellite radio with three months of complimentary service, and a power adjustable driver's seat is available for the 40/20/40 bench on regular cabs.  extended cabs feature stadium-style seating with an elevated view for those sitting in the second row. Both the extended cab and crew cab versions offer plenty of rear legroom. The rear seat bottoms can be easily be folded up to provide more room on the floor for cargo. The ltz cabin is available in three interior colors and, though it will show dirt faster, the lightest color gives the most luxurious impression.  on the other hand, the wt/lt version is more conventional truck with a more open floor area, space for junk all over, and no concerns that something might get scr. 2012 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. No question, the silverado is a great truck. The 2012 chevy silverado doesn't boast the latest design, but all the current full-size pickups are good and it mostly comes down to preference. Silverado is available in a wide range of sizes, engines, and capabilities. Most important: stabilitrak electronic stability control adds trailer sway control and hill-start assist. 2012 chevy silverado wt models now come standard with cruise control and a spare tire lock. Heated and cooled front seats and hdd navigation with xm radio and usb are available on the 2012 silverado ltz. 2012 silverado models get new colors and chrome trim changes. Silverado was last redesigned for 2007.  the base engine is a 4. 3-liter v6 (195 hp/260 lb-ft of torque) with a 4-speed automatic, offered only on regular cabs and 2wd extended cab models with the standard bed. Xfe versions feature aerodynamic upgrades in the form of a soft bed cover and extended front air dam, plus aluminum wheels (including the spare) and lower front suspension arms, locking rear differential, and low rolling resistance tires. A trailering package is standard so xfe models can tow up to 7,000 pounds.  silverado hybrid, available only in the crew cab body style and tow trim levels, uses a 6. 0-liter v8 (332 hp/367 lb-ft of torque), battery pack, and 4-speed automatic with two electric motors in it. Epa ratings are 20/23 mpg. The extended cab has rear access doors hinged at the rear that open 170 degrees to provide full access to the rear seating area. The regular cab can be outfitted with a standard bed (6-foot, 6-inch) or long bed (8-foot). The short bed (5-foot, 8-inch) is the only bed available on the crew cab.  silverado wt 22,195) is a basic work truck that comes with a driver information center, am/fm/xm stereo, 40/20/40 split-bench, vinyl-covered front seat, cruise control, dual glove boxes, two auxiliary power outlets, tire pressure monitoring system, onstar and a 4-speed automatic transmission. (all prices are manufacturers suggested retail prices, do not include destination charge, and may change at any time.)  silverado ls extended cab and crew cab models offer more features.  silverado lt 27,550 for regular cab 2wd) adds a cloth-covered front seat with lockable storage under the seat, a cd player and mp3 compatibility, power windows/locks/mirrors, remote keyless entry, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass and outside temperature displays, chrome front bumper and 17-inch styled steel wheels, and power folding and heated exterior mirrors. We think it's quite attractive.  a raked windshield (angled at 57 degrees) and careful aerodynamic and body-building engineering make the truck quiet on the inside and contribute to fuel efficiency. Gm boasts that the silverado and gmc sierra were the first full-size trucks to offer both 300 horsepower and epa highway ratings of 20 miles per gallon or better.  the large, gold chevy bowtie badge is set against a wide, three-bar chrome grille. The current silverado chassis is far more rigid than that of the previous generation, which allowed the engineers to reduce the gaps between the truck bed and passenger compartment and between fenders and bumpers. This stiffer frame also allows suspension components to be designed for improved ride and handling characteristics as well as allowing enhanced aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.  the front suspension uses coil-over shock absorbers and the rack-and-pinion steering gear design provides enhanced control and feedback. The silverado benefits from a rear axle design featuring shock absorbers mounted outboard and more upright for better dynamic control than that of the previous-generation models. interiorthe silverado wt, ls and lt come with what chevrolet calls the pure pickup interior while the ltz features a more luxurious interior.  the pure pickup interior is more driver and work oriented, includes two glove boxes in the dashboard, one of them just about the right size to hold a pair of work gloves and a few small items, and a 40/20/40-split front bench seat with the center section of the seat back folding down to form a wide arm rest with lots of storage capacity. The center stack puts ventilation and audio controls within easy site and reach of the front seat passenger. This version has a single glove box in the dash.  headlights are more or less controlled by twisting a rotary knob on the dash to the left of the steering wheel. An identical knob to the right is used to switch between 2wd and 4wd. We found it's easy to switch to 4wd, while trying to switch off the headlights.  xm satellite radio with current traffic conditions and bluetooth may be ordered, or alternately, onstar with destination download and turn-by-turn navigation. We like both.  extended cab models feature stadium-style seating with an elevated view for those sitting in the second row. Both the extended cab and crew cab versions offer plenty of rear legroom. The rear-seat bottoms can be easily folded up to provide more room on the floor for cargo. It's a smooth, cohesive design with a central console that. 2014 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new silverado aims for high country. introductionthe 2014 chevrolet silverado is the next generation of chevrolet's best-selling vehicle. Although some things look and sound familiar, like the three engines that are all-new despite being the same size as their predecessors, virtually everything has evolved to the next level or been replaced.  substantial bodywork and a larger grille for cooling match a more imposing facade with better aerodynamic properties, while the frame underneath the 2014 silverado has been stiffened despite a 30-pound weight loss. By most measures, the 2014 silverado is lighter than the 2013 model, but it hauls and tows more than before.  the 2014 chevrolet silverado comes with a roomier cabin with more luxury and safety features in a stylish new design. There's more room up front, and 2014 silverado crew cabs offer more space in back than previously. This generally improves rollover crash performance, makes a quieter, less squeak-prone interior and is easier to load in tight quarters. Often reserved for the thirstiest or most expensive engines on some trucks, these come standard on every 2014 silverado.  the new 4. 3-liter v6 is standard on every cab/bed combo. At 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque it rates just 30 less (of each) than last year's 5. 3-liter v8 and out-grunts most competitor base v6s.  the new 5. 3-liter v8 is rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. That's right in line with ford's 5-liter v8, and 2014 silverado crew cabs with the 5. 3-liter v8 match or better competitors for top payload and towing ratings. The 2014 silverado uses electric power steering.  the new silverado drives like a more refined version of the last one, even though it will tow more, go quicker or get better mileage. A very quiet cabin means happier passengers and less fatigue for owner/operators, with the double cab likely to show the most improvement.  the only thing we see lacking in the new silverado is that elusive intangible that grabs people. Chasing power and fuel economy chevrolet used different technologies than ford's ecoboost (though gm's direct-injection turbocharged car engines preceded ecoboost by years). And the new silverado doesn't offer the flashy 8-speed automatic or optional air suspension of the ram. The 5. 3-liter v8 is optional on all cabs. The 6. 2-liter v8 is available on double cab and crew cab models.  silverado wt is the base work truck 23,590). It comes with a 40/20/40 bench front seat, rubber/vinyl floor, black exterior trim, power locks and windows, cruise control, 3. 5-inch info screen, corner step rear bumper, 17-inch steel wheels, six-speaker stereo, 2 usb ports, aux input and sd card slot. 2wt models add on mylink infotainment with 4. 2-inch screen, bluetooth, cd/mp3/sirius xm/hd radio, onstar with six months' directions & connections, remote keyless entry, chrome bumpers and heated power mirrors. Silverado crew cab 1wt 32,710) and 2wt 34,764) are similarly equipped.  silverado crew cab lt 35,260) upgrades to a cloth 40/20/40 front seat with locking storage underneath, leather-wrap steering wheel with audio controls, 17-inch aluminum wheels, and ez-lift and lower tailgate.  silverado crew cab lt z71 36,850) adds off-road suspension calibration with rancho monotube shocks, hill-descent control, all-terrain tires, locking rear differential, skid plate, fog lamps, tow hooks, and a z71 appearance package. Silverado crew cab ltz z71 40,910) adds the z71 equipment. Navigation is optional.  optional equipment is extensive, often progressive (require this, must order that, etc.) and model-limited. A few examples: tri-coat white metallic paint 995), integrated trailer brake controller 230), 5. 3-liter v8 895), locking differential 395), upgrade wheels in tires in 17, 18 and 20-inch sizes, in-bed led lighting 60), leather 1,095), towing package, snow-plow package, navigation, moonroof. A choice of rear axle ratios is available, including 3. 08 and 3. 42.  safety features on all silverado models include dual front airbags, front side airbags, side-curtain airbags, and electronic stability control with trailer sway control. Options include park assist, rearview camera, forward collision and lane departure warnings. walkaroundteasing the bigger-is-better trend, the all-new 2014 chevrolet silverado looks bigger than the last one but is virtually identical in exterior dimensions; for example, it is one-tenth of an inch wider. The most obvious changes are up front and the rear doors.  a taller grille, with more chrome as price rises, and revised bumper allow more powertrain cooling, but with fewer pieces and tighter fits, more aerodynamic than before. The new silverado is instantly identifiable as a chevy even if not wearing the big badge. At least one observer initially thought the 2013 silverado next to it was just a different trim level.  massive rectangular wheel openings consume the majority of the bed side panels and reinforce the gm impression; wider wheels help fill them, but there's still a lot of open space around the tires. This may have negative implications only for tall, very broad shouldered types, but is outweighed by the superior access through the rear door, especially for boots or big toolboxes headed for the floor.  on most models the rear bumper sports a step in each corner and a corresponding handhold in the side rail for easier bed entry. High country's painted bumper loses it, but a chrome step bumper is available. Most versions offer leds under the side rails of the bed, activated by the shower-head bed light switch, for illumination beneath bed covers. A towing mirror option will be available but was not seen nor evaluated.  myriad trims, chrome packages, three wheel diameters, 10 tire choices and plenty of stickers yield many appearance permutations, even before adding accessories. The only parts that might have been pulled straight from the 2103 are the shift lever and some door switches.  a bi. 2011 chevrolet suburban review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The benchmark for full-size suvs. introductionthe chevrolet suburban can tow a sizable trailer. It can safely transport up to nine passengers. The 2011 suburban ltz 4wd comes standard with a two-speed transfer case, allowing low-range operation, and chrome recovery hooks. Launched during the great depression in 1936, the suburban was completely redesigned for the 2007 model year.  the suburban can hold 137 cubic feet of cargo, or up to nine passengers and 45 cubic feet of cargo, or myriad combinations in between. Two weight classes are offered, the normal 1500 and the heavy-duty 2500. The 1500 and 2500 are available in ls and lt trim levels, and the 1500 is also available in a more luxury-oriented ltz trim level.  suburban 1500 models come with a 5. 3-liter v8 engine of 320 horsepower, 335 pound-feet of torque and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy for a suburban 1500 is an epa-estimated 15/21 mpg city/highway.  suburban 2500 models get a 6. 0-liter v8 with aluminum block and heads and variable valve timing rated at 352 horsepower and 382 pound-feet of torque. It also comes with a 6-speed automatic. Suburban 2500 4wd is rated at a woeful 10/15 mpg. Sadly, a diesel engine is not available.  the suburban 2500 uses a different steering gear, brake parts, suspension, alternator, wheels, tires, axles and fuel tank than the 1500 series. The primary reason for selecting the 2500 over the 1500 is for its greater towing capacity. A suburban 2500 4wd is rated to tow up to 9,400 pounds, or 9,600 pounds with 2wd. A suburban 1500 4wd is rated to tow up to 8,000 pounds.  all engines are e85-compatible, which means they will run on 85-percent ethanol fuel, and all have active fuel management (afm) which switches off half the cylinders when the additional power or idle smoothness isn't needed. Fuel economy with e85 is a dismal 11/16 mpg for the suburban 1500, however. Suburban 1500 ls 4wd 43,770) models add the autotrac system that has on-pavement all-wheel-drive ability (no two-speed transfer case with low range). A 40/20/40 split front bench seat with fold-down armrest and storage is available.  options include a trailer package, which for 2011 includes an integrated trailer brake controller 430); a convenience package with adjustable pedals, remote start, rear park assist, and rear camera display in the rearview mirror 1,060); locking differential 295); 3. 42:1 axle ratio; and engine block heater 75).  suburban lt 2wd 44,435) and lt 4wd 47,280) add leather seating, bose premium sound, automatic climate control, automatic locking rear differential, remote start, rear park assist, adjustable pedals, fog lamps, and two more 12-volt power outlets (for a total of five). Lt models offer a dvd-capable audio system with navigation 2,500), a rear-seat entertainment system 1,295), and other options not available on the ls.  suburban ltz 2wd 53,170) and ltz 4wd 56,170) come with perforated leather seating surfaces, a navigation system with xm navtraffic and rearview camera, bose centerpoint surround sound, second-row bucket seats, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, autoride suspension with rear air assist and self-leveling, and other features.  the z71 off-road package 1,535) is offered only on the lt trim level, in 2wd or 4wd. Safety-related options include rear park assist, and side blind zone alert. walkaroundsuburban's profile is elegant in its simplicity, no lines drawing the eye up or down, just a smooth clean surface from one end to the other like an aircraft. Big boxes are best carried in big boxes, not sloping hatchbacks.  the suburban has a square-jawed face that's smooth and rugged at the same time, a twin to the shorter tahoe. The mesh grille is split by a gold chevy bowtie, and the daytime running lights use separate lamps and can be switched off for after-dark campground arrivals. The bumper fascia reveals a low license-plate holder sandwiched by openings for tow hooks, with small round fog lamps at the corners like single teardrops falling from the headlamp eyes. The seam between the fascia and fenders is very tight, and a good indication of gm's solid body quality on the current generation of trucks.  the hood has two long bulges at its sides, reaching almost from windshield to grille; chevy calls these twin bulges the power dome; we call them a good way to keep such a large expanse of otherwise-flat steel from fluttering, just as long-cab pickups have grooves on the roof. For aesthetics we would prefer if the roof-mounted antenna were centered but long, flat cargo on the roof might present a problem.  the rear liftgate is vertical, and the rear window opens independently, with both the manual and power liftgate, which is aluminum, reducing the weight and thus the effort to raise and lower it. Rear wiper coverage is average at best. Some are nearly void of chrome while the z71 adds machismo with sizable fender flares and side steps so short drivers can get in and tall ones can mess up their pant legs.  the standard wheels are five-spoke, 17-inch aluminum. Polished wheels are available. Also available are 20-inch wheels that look good, but we think they are too big for grown-ups. Taller tire sidewalls yield a better ride and in most consumer-magazine testing those large-diameter wheels don't go, stop or handle any better, they just ride harder so we prefer the 17-inch wheels. With all the seats in place and set for passengers, 45. 8 cubic feet of cargo space is available, with 90 behind the second row with the third row removed. But there is a nice compartment over the left wheel well, for tools, flashlights, snow chains or the like.  smart storage space abounds. The huge console has deep storage and a tray on top. There are two cup holders in a removable tray forward of the console, and one in each wide door pocket. The seats are designed for american comfort rather than european firmness, and can be ordered with heat and cooling. The front seats are bucket seats on most models, but a bench seat can be specified to allow three passengers in the front.  the second row can be outfitted with a bench seat or a pair of buckets. The bench seat is split, so the right third of the seat folds independently of the left to allow curb-side entry to the third row; it also allows skis or boards on the right with two passengers on the left. 2009 chevrolet silverado 2500hd review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The most car-like of the heavy-duty pickups. introductionchevy silverado hd heavy-duty pickups are about real work and serious play. The 2500-series is often used like a car and charged with pulling the boat or trailer on weekends, while the 3500 usually sees hauling and pulling duty on a routine basis and tows fifth-wheel rvs and six-horse trailers. And the standard six-speed automatic one-ups the competition. The silverado is well finished, inside and out.  after a mid-2007 debut for the new chevy silverado hd, the 2009 models get some minor yet worthwhile upgrades. These include a rearview camera system for longer-cab models, electronic stability control on more models, bluetooth wireless connectivity, xm satellite radio with real-time traffic reporting, and onstar 8. 0 with turn-by-turn navigation and destination download.  a choice of interiors is available, with different dashboards rather than merely varied finishes. Yet it carries and tows as well as other heavy-duty pickups. Three cab styles are available, regular cab, extended cab, and crew cab, along with two box sizes. Cab and chassis models, suitable for fitting a custom work or tow body on, are also available.  trim levels vary from vinyl-floored work truck (wt) models through lt to plush ltz, the latter using a unique interior design.  wt comes with six-speaker am/fm/xm stereo, abs, air conditioning, tire pressure monitors, 40/20/40 vinyl front bench with armrest, and six-speed automatic with tow/haul mode and dual overdrives.  lt adds auto-dimming mirror and compass, cruise control, driver lumbar, locking seat cushion storage, leather-wrapped steering wheel, electronic shift 4wd, and chrome wheel trim. Lt2 (about $1800) adds better upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, fog lamps, and audio controls on the steering wheel.  ltz includes an upscale dashboard design, leather upholstery with 12-way power and heated seats in front, two-person driver memory, bose audio system with subwoofer, locking differential, remote start, trailer package, 17-inch aluminum wheels, and heated windshield washer fluid system.  the standard engine is an iron-block 6. 0-liter v8 with variable cam timing and 360 hp; on duallies (gvwr less than 10,000 pounds) the engine is de-rated to 322 hp. The duramax diesel, at 365 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque, is optional (about $7200) and requires the allison six-speed automatic transmission (about $1200).  options range from working gear such as the integrated trailer brake controller, dual alternators on diesels, remote start, and a snow plow prep package to satellite radio, heated seats and a moonroof. Many options are interrelated so check everything carefully.  safety equipment includes frontal airbags, front seat belt pretensioners, abs, and onstar. walkaroundfor this generation the chevy silverado and gmc sierra do not share near-identical appearance. Lamps and trim vary but so do fenders, boxes and the hood; mechanical bits are shared. Dual-rear-wheel pickups have a hydroformed sheetmetal pickup box with integral overfenders and better paint finishing.  with the big chrome crossbar and bow-tie logo silverado hd pickups are immediately recognized as chevrolets. The heavy-duty silverado hd pickups maintain visual relationships to the light-duty silverado 1500 models. The hood could have been drawn by a snowmobile designer, with upswept shelves at the sides ending in plastic trim louvers (that serve a vent function on diesels) and vortec (gas) or duramax (diesel) badging.  useful features include an optional tailgate lock and lift assist, dual-element towing mirrors, a cargo management system with multiple adjustable tie-down points (500 pounds per) and a wealth of dealer-supplied toolboxes, and a 2. 5-inch receiver hitch capable of towing 13,000 pounds on the top-rated models.  the silverado hd matches up against other heavy-duty pickups in most dimensions as they all carry the proverbial 4x8 sheet of plywood flat in long-box models. All are marked improvements over the previous-generation (pre-2007) models. The cabin is squeak and rattle-free and even the faux wood trim is well-done.  for recreational towing the luxury version may be the choice, but the pure pickup level gives up nothing in build quality, function (it has a second glovebox, the luxury does not) nor appearance.  we noticed interior color has an effect on how inviting any version is.  seats are supportive and are easily adjusted. Adjustable pedals and tilt wheel are available. Truckers who add myriad lights and accessories will note a lack of dedicated switch blanks while others will appreciate the cohesive design.  the extended cab back seat is suited for smaller adults and kids. For better access, the side doors swing 170 degrees for easier loading in tight parking spaces. The windows in those small doors roll down completely for comfort and venting options. The moonroof cover is a solid material on most trim levels. We prefer the solid shade.  all controls are plainly laid out, the only nitpick being the number of similarly shaped and sized black buttons, some of which large-fingered individuals might find hard to push without hitting the adjacent one by mistake, especially when wearing gloves. Instrumentation is complete, responsive, and easy to see at a glance. Dual-zone climate control supporting a side-to-side delta of 30 degrees (fahrenheit) is offered on many models. Diesels get a fast warm-up function. The navigation system is available on ltz models. The higher box sides haven't compromised rear visibility, and the new towing mirrors are a big improvement. driving impressionthe chevy silverado hd is the most car-like of the heavy-duty pickup trucks.  that said, an hd silverado drives heavy, as in a solid feel and deliberate control inputs. It feels confident empty or with a maximum load on board. The added frame stiffness and body build quality mean there is much less sensation of a separate cab and box. Pogo-sticking or bobbing is dependent on road surface and wheelbase and ultimately hard to avoid everywhere, but such motions are now well-controlled and unlikely to redistribute improperly secured cargo.  the hd is a serious truck, designed to carry anywhere from a ton up. Two, it tends to be a bit lighter up front, especially comparing a gas silverado to a v10 gas ford. 2009 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Powertrain upgrades include new hybrid. introductionthe 2009 chevy silverado phases in a new six-speed automatic transmission, a bigger v8, an economical xfe model, and a gasoline-electric hybrid. The 2008 models brought some additional features and refinement. For 2009, all the major changes are under the hood for 2009.  silverado styling is bold by gm truck standards yet still traditional when compared with the latest pickups from dodge, nissan, toyota, and ford. The integrated trailer brake controller and enhanced stability control are not available with the 4. 3-liter. A 6. 0-liter aluminum block v8 (367 hp/375 lb-ft of torque) with variable cam timing and active fuel management is available on long-cab lt and ltz models in conjunction with the nht maximum tow package. The six-speed automatic is being phased in as standard.  xfe (xtra fuel economy) models use a 5. 3-liter v8, six-speed automatic and cruising-biased axle ratio of 3. 08:1 to increase epa ratings. Xfe versions feature aerodynamic upgrades in the form of a soft bed cover and extended front air dam, plus aluminum wheels (including the spare) and lower front suspension arms, locking rear differential, and low rolling resistance tires. A trailering package is standard so xfe models can tow up to 7000 pounds.  new for 2009 is the 6. 2-liter v8 (403 hp/417 lb-ft of torque), a flex-fuel engine with aluminum block and variable cam timing and a six-speed automatic. It is offered only on crew cab models and returns 13/19 mpg epa ratings with premium unleaded recommended.  the other new power option for 2009 is the two-mode hybrid that debuted in the 2008 tahoe and yukon. Epa ratings are 21/22 mpg. Lt models can be upgraded with premium cloth front bucket seats with six-way power adjustment, dual-zone automatic temperature controls, audio controls mounted on the steering wheel, fog lamps, aluminum wheels, chromed bumper, and a spare tire lock.  ltz 33,080) adds heavy-duty trailering equipment, an automatic locking rear differential, body-colored bumpers, reclining and heated leather front seats with 12-way power, an in-dash six-cd changer with bose speakers, 18-inch wheels, turn signal indicators in the exterior rearview mirrors and heated windshield washers.  extended cab and crew cab models have back seats and windows in the side doors that power down. The extended cab has rear access doors hinged at the rear that open to 170 degrees to provide full access to the rear seating area. The regular cab can be outfitted with a standard bed (6-foot, 6-inch) or long bed (8-foot). Safety options include side-curtain airbags, stabilitrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology, autotrac active transfer case, rear park assist, and onstar.  option prices vary by trim level and body style. Among them: a cargo management system for the truck bed 95), a power sliding sunroof 795), 20-inch wheels/suspension 995), a power sliding rear window 200), rear-seat entertainment system 1,295), and navigation system 2,250). On lesser models: locking differential 395), stabilitrak electronic stability control 425), tow packages. walkaroundthe chevy silverado may not have the aggressive styling of the dodge ram or nissan titan or even the toyota tundra or the 2009 ford f-150, but its upright design may be considered both bold and appealing to its faithful customers, and they buy hundreds of thousands of silverados each year. We think it's quite attractive.  a raked windshield (angled at 57 degrees) and careful aerodynamic and body-building engineering make the truck both quieter on the inside and more fuel efficient. Gm boasts that the silverado and gmc sierra are the first full-size trucks to offer both 300 horsepower and epa highway ratings of 20 miles per gallon (2wd 5. 3-liter v8 on gasoline).  the large, gold chevy bowtie badge is set against a wide, three-bar chrome grille. The grille is flanked by stacked headlights sporting the latest reflector optics. The front bumper incorporates rectangular fog lights.  the hood has a wide power dome. Bulging front fenders wrap over the front wheels and incorporate the headlights within their forward sweep. Likewise, the rear quarter panels are punctuated by large faired wheel wells.  the rear view of the truck features stacked tail lights on either side of a tall tailgate that has a sculpted center section that mimics and inverts the shape of the fender flares.  built on what general motors calls its gmt900 platform, the silverado shares much of its underpinnings with the tahoe suv, though the pickup gets a unique rear suspension and a frame section 245 percent stiffer than that of the suv. The current silverado chassis is far more rigid than that of the previous-generation, helping reduce the gap between the truck bed and passenger compartment and between fenders and bumpers. This allows suspension components to be designed for improved ride and handling characteristics as well as allowing enhanced aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.  the front suspension uses coil-over shock absorbers (rather than torsion bars) and the rack-and-pinion steering gear is mounted to the engine cross member to provide enhanced control and feedback. The silverado benefits from a rear axle design featuring shocks absorbers mounted outboard and more upright for better dynamic control than that of the previous-generation models. interiorthe silverado wt, ls and lt come with what chevy calls the pure pickup interior while the ltz features a more luxurious interior.  the pure pickup interior is more driver and work oriented, includes two glove boxes in the dashboard, one of them just about the right size to hold a pair of work gloves and a few small items, and a 40/20/40-split front bench seat with the center section of the seat back folding down to form a wide arm rest with lots of storage capacity. This version has a single glove box i. 2012 chevrolet tahoe review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Based on a platform similar to the suburban and silverado models, the tahoe makes a stable rig for pulling trailers.  with its rigid chassis, the tahoe feels taut for its size, steering is precise and responsive, and the brakes are capable and smooth. The ride quality is generally smooth, even with the available 20-inch wheels. The major difference between the two engines is that one has a cast-iron block and the other an aluminum block; each delivers 320 horsepower, is matched with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and provides all the power and performance most customers will need. The engines are also e85-compatible, which means they will run on 85-percent ethanol fuel. Epa fuel economy ratings (on gasoline) are 15/21 mpg city/highway.  the tahoe hybrid has a 6. 0-liter v8 of 332 horsepower and a two-mode hybrid system, and works seamlessly. The hybrid model provides an answer for those who spend the week in city traffic but want to tow up to 6,200 pounds and bring the family on the weekend. It comes in handy for rugged terrain and serious snow and ice, but it's also handy for yanking a boat up a slippery boat ramp or pulling a trailer out of a silty, sandy parking area, those momentary needs that can be so crucial.  changes for 2012 are relatively minor. A new hard-drive navigation system, integrated into an am/fm/xm/cd stereo, includes a usb port, time-shift recording capability, and the hardware for siriusxm weather service. The standard stabilitrak stability control system now includes electronic trailer sway control and hill start assist. Mid-range lt models get heated seats as standard equipment; and flagship ltz’s get a heated as well as leather-wrapped steering wheel, and side blind zone alert. All 2012 tahoe models benefit from seat-mounted side-impact airbags for the driver and front-seat passenger. The current-generation tahoe was launched as a 2007 model. lineupthe 2012 chevrolet tahoe comes in ls, lt, ltz, and hybrid trim levels. A luxury package for lt 1,575) adds auto-dimming inside and driver mirrors, power folding and heated exterior mirrors with turn signals and reverse-tilt, heated first- and second-row seats, homelink, and a power liftgate. Also available is the new hdd navigation 2,500).  tahoe ltz 52,970) and ltz 4wd 56,075) upgrade to 12-way power perforated leather front seats, heated and cooled; heated second-row bucket seats; driver memory system; autoride suspension; power liftgate; power-folding heated reverse-tilt mirrors; auto-dimming inside and driver's side mirrors; chrome trim; bose centerpoint audio system; new hdd navigation; rear-view camera; xm navtraffic; and 20-inch polished aluminum wheels with 275/55r20 tires. A heated steering wheel and side blind zone alert are also new for 2012.  tahoe hybrid 51,970) and hybrid 4wd 54,775) are equipped between the lt and ltz. The hybrid does not have roof rails, fog lamps, tow hooks, or a separate glass opening on the liftgate. Hybrid mechanicals are warranted for eight years or 100,000 miles. Hybrid models come with the hdd navigation/audio system with rearview camera, locking rear differential, and p265/65r18 low-rolling resistance tires on alloy wheels. The hybrid uses a 6. 0-liter v8 gas engine, rated at 332 horsepower and 367 pound-feet of torque, and an electric drive system contained within the transmission.  options include polished aluminum 20-inch wheels 1,795); audio system upgrades; moonroof 995); retractable side steps 1,095); trailer brake controller 200); rear-seat dvd entertainment 1,395); second-row bucket seats 590); skid plate package 150); and engine block heater 75). Optional safety features include side blind zone alert, rearview cameras, and rear park assist; all are useful and we recommend the cameras particularly to help the driver spot small children and other people when backing up. Automotive engineers judge wind-cheating aerodynamics by a factor known as the coefficient of drag: the lower the number, the easier air flows over it. The tahoe has a cd of 0. 36. The hybrid is even more slippery, with a cd of 0. 34. However, total drag also includes frontal area, and the tahoe's substantial frontal profile means it isn't as low-drag as a much smaller vehicle with a slightly higher cd.  up front, the tahoe features a clean interpretation of chevrolet's two-tier front grille with a central bowtie logo. Tow hook openings flank the license plate frame and they are, on cars so equipped, flanked by fog lights. The sides of the tahoe have little ornamentation, yielding a smooth design. Windows aren't shrunk in the name of style and offer a decent view; unlike the suburban the rear side windows do not roll all the way down. And at the rear, the liftgate has separate opening glass to offer easier loading of small items and the bumper top is ribbed for safer roof loading.  the smooth appearance doesn't mean the tahoe looks soft. Built on a wide frame, this is a commanding vehicle with a strong stance. A bulging hood enhances its visual strength. Further boosting the muscular look are standard 17-inch wheels, with 18s and 20s available.  the tahoe ltz can be distinguished by its standard chrome accents on the door handles and grille inserts.  the hybrid model has several distinct characteristics. To offset the added weight of the hybrid system (the hybrid tahoe weighs about 250 pounds more than a standard tahoe) and reduce drag, the front end features an aluminum hood and front bumper beam, a lowered air dam, and a slightly larger grille opening to offset the blocked off fog light and tow hook openings and smaller lower air inlets. Along the sides, the running boards are tapered front and rear for improved aerodynamics and the wheel flares are slightly reshaped. At the back, the rear side pillars, roof spoiler and center high-mounted stoplight have a unique shape, the tailgate is made of aluminum and has fixed glass, and led tail lights. The wheels are more aero efficient and the tires have lower rolling resistance. The spare tire and jack have been replaced by a tire inflation kit. Hybrids also carry h logos with a printed-circuit board-like center. Thankfully, the substantial hybrid wallpaper that ran along the doors of earlier models was stripped off for 2011 and remains off for 2012. interiorthe chevy tahoe instrument panel and center stack are cleanly designed and easy to use. The gauge cluster is attractive and informative, dominated by the large, easy-to-read tachometer and speedometer in black with blue-green numbers; the tachometer scal.
